The RTS Link Is Coming — and Taman Pelangi Is 3 km Away

The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link is targeted to open by end of 2026. When it does, the journey between Bukit Chagar station in JB and Woodlands North in Singapore will take approximately five minutes. For Malaysians working in Singapore, for Singaporeans visiting JB for food and a weekend away, and for budget travellers using JB as a cheaper base — this changes the map significantly.

Taman Pelangi is approximately 3 km from Bukit Chagar station (according to Mah Sing, the developer of the area's largest new project — cited across Bernama, The Star, and KLSE Screener). That is a 10-minute Grab or a manageable commute. And right now, before the RTS Link opens, it is still one of JB's most affordable neighbourhoods with its local character intact.

What the RTS Link Actually Is

The RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar station (Johor Bahru) to Woodlands North station (Singapore) in approximately 5 minutes, operated by a joint venture of SMRT Singapore and Prasarana Malaysia.

Key confirmed facts as of July 2026:

• Target opening: by end of December 2026 — confirmed jointly by Singapore Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow and Malaysia Minister of Transport Anthony Loke on 30 June 2025
• Capacity: 8 trains, 4 cars each, capacity for 10,000+ passengers per hour at peak
• Journey time: approximately 5 minutes between stations
• Fares: not yet confirmed — expected announcement in second half of 2026. Early analyst estimates: S$5–S$7 one-way (approximately RM15–22)
• Immigration: cleared at departure station only — no double queueing at both ends, unlike the current Causeway crossing
• Progress: First train arrived at Woodlands North test site on 5 February 2026 (Malay Mail). Rail systems were 56% complete as of June 2025

What Is Happening in Taman Pelangi Right Now

Property developers noticed the RTS effect before most travellers did. Two major new projects launched in Taman Pelangi in 2025:

M Grand Minori by Mah Sing is a 5.99-acre freehold mixed-use development on Jalan Kuning, Taman Pelangi — 1,733 serviced apartment units across two 59-storey towers, total GDV RM1.5 billion. Phase 1 launched at the sales gallery on 11 August 2025 and achieved a 90% take-up rate over a single weekend (Bernama; The Star, 11 Aug 2025). Phase 1 prices started at RM390,000 for a 403 sq ft studio, up to RM769,000 for 835 sq ft. Phase 2 was targeting a Q2–Q3 2026 launch.

Residensi Maxim by Maxim Global launched 1,026 units in November 2025, from 450–865 sq ft at RM426,000–RM816,000 (The Edge Malaysia Q4 2025 JB Property Monitor).

A 90% take-up rate in a single weekend is not speculative hype. It reflects buyers who are convinced that a 5-minute rail link to Singapore will materially increase the value — and the demand — for accommodation in this neighbourhood.

What This Means for Budget Travellers Right Now

The short version: Taman Pelangi is still at pre-RTS prices, and that window is finite.

A capsule pod at Pelangi Capsule Hostel — located at 26A Jalan Perang in Taman Pelangi — costs RM30/night on weekdays, RM35 on weekends. Monthly stays from RM600. The street outside has a Korean BBQ that has been running for 17 years, a heritage zi char restaurant dating to 1979, Japanese-Western fusion cafes, and new brunch spots that opened in 2025 and 2026. It is a neighbourhood that still functions like one.

When the RTS Link opens and weekend visitors from Singapore begin flowing through Bukit Chagar in volume, demand for affordable accommodation in the area will grow. Property developers have already priced that in. Short-stay rates have not — yet.

Practical Notes for Visitors

• Getting from Bukit Chagar to Taman Pelangi: approximately 3 km by road, 8–12 minutes by Grab from JB Sentral (near the Bukit Chagar area). The RTS Link is not yet open — until then, crossing by Causeway or Second Link is the standard route from Singapore
• From JB Sentral now: Causeway Link CW1/CW2 buses stop near JB Sentral, then about 10 minutes by Grab to Taman Pelangi
• Food nearby: Five confirmed-open restaurants on Jalan Perang within walking distance of the hostel; three new cafes and bars that opened in 2025–2026
