JB–Singapore RTS Link 2026: What the Final Testing Phase Means for Travellers
The Short Version
The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link is a 4 km light rail line connecting Bukit Chagar station (JB) to Woodlands North station (Singapore). Trials began in December 2025 without passengers, and from July 2026 the project entered its final comprehensive testing phase — the most complex stretch, involving customs, immigration, and security agencies from both countries simultaneously. Targeted completion remains 31 December 2026, with full public operations expected by January 2027.
If you are planning a trip to JB in the second half of 2026, or thinking about commuting between both cities once the line opens, this is the timeline you need to understand.
Where the Project Stands Right Now
As of mid-2026, systems and operational works had passed 65% completion (per the November 2025 progress report). The current July–December 2026 testing window is the critical final hurdle: it is not just testing the trains themselves but validating the integrated operations of both countries' border agencies in a live environment. That is a much harder coordination challenge than running empty trains on a track.
Key facts about the line:
- Length: 4 km, connecting the two border districts
- Journey time: approximately 5 minutes between the two terminals
- Rolling stock: 8 train sets, 4 coaches each
- Capacity: up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction
- Expected one-way fare: S$5–S$7 (final fares to be confirmed in the second half of 2026)
The fare range, once confirmed, will make crossing dramatically faster than sitting in Causeway traffic — and far more predictable.
What This Means If You Are Commuting Now
The RTS Link is not open yet. Until it is, the two main options remain:
- Causeway buses: CW1 (Larkin ↔ Kranji MRT) and bus 170 (Larkin ↔ Queen Street). Budget RM5–RM10 one-way depending on operator, plus queuing time at the checkpoint.
- KTM Shuttle Tebrau: Runs between JB Sentral and Woodlands CIQ. Short hop, roughly RM5 from the JB side, useful for avoiding the Causeway pedestrian queue.
The current crossing experience — functional, but queues at peak hours can stretch 30–90 minutes — is exactly why the RTS Link is being watched so closely. Our JB–Singapore commuter guide covers current crossing options in detail. The day-trip Causeway guide is also worth reading if you are visiting from Singapore for the first time.
The Accommodation Logic for 2026 and Early 2027
Once the RTS Link opens, Bukit Chagar becomes the new focal point for travellers crossing from Singapore. Demand for accommodation within easy reach of that station will increase — it is a straightforward consequence of making the crossing faster and more predictable.
Pelangi Capsule Hostel is roughly 10 minutes' drive from the Bukit Chagar station area, putting you in the same corridor as JB Sentral and the causeway checkpoint. The same proximity that makes us convenient for current bus and KTM crossings will hold once the RTS opens.
| Period | Best crossing method | Estimated crossing time |
|---|---|---|
| Now (July 2026) | Causeway bus CW1/170, or KTM Shuttle | 45–90 min including queue |
| From Jan 2027 (projected) | RTS Link (Bukit Chagar ↔ Woodlands North) | ~5 min rail + immigration time |
Planning Your Stay Around the Timeline
If you are visiting JB now, treat the current situation as business as usual — Causeway crossings are manageable with the right timing (avoid Sunday evenings, Malaysian public holidays, and peak-hour Fridays). If you are planning a trip for early 2027, it is worth watching LTA's official updates before booking transport, as the January 2027 operational date could shift slightly depending on how the remaining testing phases resolve.
For commuters already living between both cities, JB accommodation is increasingly a practical choice. At RM30/night on weekdays and RM35/night on weekends, a monthly stay from RM594, and a 10-minute drive to the crossing — the numbers work well as a base while the RTS testing phase completes.
We offer 24/7 self check-in, free WiFi, and standard check-in from 3:00 PM (check-out by 12:00 PM). WhatsApp us on +60 12-708 8789 if you have questions about long stays or flexible arrangements.
