What to Eat on Jalan Perang: A Food Street Guide from Pelangi Capsule Hostel's Doorstep
Five Restaurants on the Hostel's Own Street
Jalan Perang is one of Taman Pelangi's best-kept food secrets. Within a five-minute walk from Pelangi Capsule Hostel, you have Korean BBQ, Japanese-Western fusion, Teochew fish soup, and one of JB's most famous heritage zi char restaurants — all on the same street. No Grab needed.
Every restaurant on this list was verified as open as of mid-2026 using multiple independent sources. Hours and menus can change, so confirm by phone or Google Maps before visiting — especially if you are planning a specific day.
1. Dusk by Mok Mok — Japanese-Western Fusion (No. 49)
The most photographed cafe on the street. Dusk by Mok Mok occupies a converted shophouse styled with rattan furniture, trailing plants, and neon signage that reads like a Bali-Tokyo crossover. It is the sister outlet to the original Mok Mok Brunch and Bistro.
The kitchen runs a Japanese-Western menu built around JB's love of seafood. The standout is the Chilli Crab Pasta (RM36) — fresh crab sauce over al dente pasta with a proper chilli kick. The Curry Karaage Risotto (RM32) is a close second. Cash or bank transfer only (no credit cards as of last check). Parking on the street fills up by 7 PM on weekends — walk from the hostel instead.
- Address: 49 Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi
- Hours: Daily approximately 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
- Halal: Not certified (no pork, no lard)
- Phone: +60 19-771 0068
- Price range: RM16–RM36 per main
2. Yeon Cafe — Korean-Japanese, Halal (No. 12)
Yeon is the most popular halal option on the street and probably the most Instagrammed. Minimalist Korean interior — pastel tones, clean lines, soft K-pop in the background — and a menu that blends Korean and Japanese techniques effectively.
The Salmon Yuzu Ochazuke (RM33) is the dish to order: green tea broth poured over rice and salmon, fragrant and light. The Rainbow Kimbap (RM18) works as a snack or side. For dessert, the Genmaicha Mochi Tart (RM12) sells out early.
Some older sources mention Yeon closes on Tuesdays — call ahead if that is your day.
- Address: 12 Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi
- Hours: Daily 10:30 AM – 10:00 PM (call to confirm Tuesday hours)
- Halal: Yes — certified
- Phone: +60 18-385 6899

3. Korean BBQ Nam Moon — 17 Years on Jalan Perang (No. 29–31)
Nam Moon is the oldest Korean restaurant on the street and the one most frequented by Korean expats in JB — a reliable indicator of authenticity. The family has been running it for about 17 years, with smokeless sunken charcoal grills still going strong.
Lunch sets (noon–2 PM) start from around RM12: rice, kimchi soup, and up to 8 house-made banchan side dishes. Dinner group BBQ sets run from RM115 for 2 pax with pork belly, pork jowl, marinated spare ribs, and marbled beef ribs. House-made makgeolli rice wine is available.
- Address: 29–31 Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi
- Hours: Daily 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
- Halal: No (pork served)
- Phone: +60 7-331 5573
- Price range: Lunch from RM12 | Dinner sets from RM115 for 2 pax
4. CM Restaurant — Teochew Fish Head Soup (No. 21)
No signage, no social media, no hype. CM Restaurant has been in the same Jalan Perang shophouse for over 30 years, now run by the second generation of the Chew family. The regulars order without looking at the menu.
Traditional Teochew seafood: fish head soup, steamed fish with preserved turnip, sweet potato leaves with garlic. These are not dishes you describe — they are dishes you eat slowly. Closed Sundays.
- Address: 21 Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi
- Hours: Mon–Sat 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM (closed Sundays)
- Halal: No
- Phone: +60 12-774 7775
5. Restoran Ah Kaw — Original San Lou Mee Hoon Since 1979 (No. 33)
Ah Kaw is the reason food writers make the trip to Jalan Perang. Established in 1979, this zi char restaurant is widely credited as the original creator of San Lou Mee Hoon — the charred, wok-fragrant fried vermicelli that later spread across JB and into Singapore.
Order the San Lou Mee Hoon (RM9). The Shrimp Paste Chicken (RM17) and Fried Squid with Salted Egg (RM20) round out a solid table. Cash preferred. Closed Tuesdays.
- Address: 33 Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi
- Hours: Wed–Mon, 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM (closed Tuesdays)
- Halal: No (zi char)
- Phone: +60 7-334 0590
- Price range: RM9–RM20 per dish
