Johor State Election 11 July 2026: What Travellers to JB Need to Know

The Short Version

Johor holds its 16th State Assembly election with polling on Saturday 11 July 2026. Polling day is a public holiday in Johor state (not in the rest of Malaysia or Singapore). Early voting for police and military personnel happens on 7 July, and campaigning runs until 11:59 PM on 10 July.

For travellers, the practical impacts are simple: a much busier Causeway from 10–12 July, some shops opening late on polling day, and higher demand for JB accommodation that weekend. Everything else — attractions, malls, transport, and your capsule pod at Pelangi — runs as normal. See our dedicated election weekend guide for guests for the quick-reference version.

Why the Causeway Gets Crazy

Hundreds of thousands of Johoreans live and work in Singapore, and Malaysian elections require voting in person in your home constituency. That means a huge wave of voters crossing back into JB on Friday night 10 July and Saturday morning 11 July, then returning to Singapore on Sunday 12 July — on top of the normal weekend crowd.

During the last state election in 2022, Causeway queues on election eve stretched for hours. Expect the same pattern at both the Causeway (Woodlands) and the Second Link (Tuas).

How to beat the queue

  • Cross before 7 AM or after 9 PM — the golden rule applies double on election weekend.
  • Take the bus. Bus CW1 from Kranji and bus 170 from Queen Street use bus lanes that clear far faster than car queues. Full details in our Causeway crossing guide.
  • Shift your crossing day. If your plans are flexible, cross on Thursday 9 July or Monday 13 July instead.
  • Or just stay in JB. Skip the border entirely — base yourself in Taman Pelangi for the weekend and explore JB while the queues rage on.

What's Open on Polling Day

Saturday 11 July is a public holiday in Johor, which affects businesses differently:

  • Open as usual: malls, convenience stores, cinemas, most tourist-area restaurants, Grab, and the CIQ border checkpoints (24/7 as always).
  • Open, but maybe late: smaller kopitiam, mamak stalls, and family-run shops — many owners vote in the morning and open by lunchtime.
  • Closed: banks, government offices, and some offices/factories.

In Taman Pelangi, you'll still find breakfast — just with slightly fewer choices before noon than a typical Saturday.

Is It Safe to Visit During an Election?

Yes. Malaysian elections are orderly, festive affairs — think flags, banners, campaign trucks with loudspeakers, and lively kopitiam debates rather than anything worrying. Voting happens quietly at schools and community halls, and by evening everyone is glued to the results coverage.

Two small courtesies for visitors: don't photograph people inside polling centres, and avoid wearing political party colours or logos near polling stations on the day.

Why Election Weekend Is Actually a Great Time to Stay in JB

  • The atmosphere. Election night in a Malaysian kopitiam — live results on every screen, teh tarik flowing — is a genuine cultural experience you can't book a ticket for.
  • Singapore day-trippers thin out. With locals focused on voting, some attractions and cafes are quieter than a normal Saturday.
  • You're not going anywhere anyway. If you're mid-way through a JB↔SG itinerary, riding out the border rush from a RM35 pod beats sitting in a bus queue for three hours.

Your Stay at Pelangi Capsule Hostel

We operate completely as usual through the election weekend:

  • Check-in: 3:00 PM onwards (24/7 self check-in — arrive any time)
  • Check-out: before 12:00 PM
  • Address: 26A Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru
  • WhatsApp: +60 12-708 8789 if you need anything

One honest tip: book early for 10–12 July. Returning voters and their families snap up budget beds in JB faster than a normal weekend, and pods are limited. Reserve your pod now and cross the Causeway on your own schedule.
