Merdeka and Malaysia Day 2026 in Johor Bahru — Dates, Crowds and Where to Stay

The Two Dates

• Merdeka Day — Monday 31 August 2026. A national public holiday in Malaysia, and it lands on a Monday, so most of the country gets a three-day weekend running Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August.
• Malaysia Day — Wednesday 16 September 2026. Also a national public holiday, but midweek. No long weekend attached.

What That Means If You Are Coming From Singapore

Worth being precise here, because a lot of travel content gets it wrong: neither date is a Singapore public holiday. Merdeka and Malaysia Day are Malaysian holidays. So the crowd on those dates is mostly domestic — Malaysians travelling within Malaysia, and Johoreans working in Singapore heading home.

The practical effect on a Singapore-based traveller is one-directional: the Causeway gets heavy in the JB-bound direction on the Friday and Saturday before Merdeka, and heavy back toward Singapore on Monday evening. JB itself is busier, malls are full, and accommodation books out earlier than a normal weekend.

If you want a quiet JB weekend, the weekend after Merdeka is a much better bet than the weekend of it.

Note on Johor's Weekend

Worth clearing up, because a lot of older travel content still gets this wrong: Johor's weekend is Saturday and Sunday, the same as the rest of Malaysia and the same as Singapore. The state ran a Friday–Saturday weekend from 2014 but reverted on 1 January 2025 (source: The Star, 7 October 2024, reporting the Regent of Johor's announcement). If you read somewhere that Johor offices close on Fridays, that guide is out of date.

What Is Open

On both holidays: banks and government offices close, malls and convenience stores open, most restaurants and hawker stalls open, though smaller kopitiam may start late. The Taman Pelangi night market runs every Tuesday from 4:30 PM regardless — 1 September is a Tuesday, so the market runs the day after Merdeka.

Where to Stay

Pelangi Capsule Hostel is in Taman Pelangi, central JB: pods at RM30 for a first-time guest's first night, RM35 per night after that, repeat guests RM35 throughout. Malaysia Tourism Tax of RM10 per room per night applies to foreign tourists only.

Self check-in runs 24 hours with no curfew, so a late Causeway crossing is not a problem. Luggage storage before check-in and after check-out is free.

Booking Advice

For a Malaysian public-holiday weekend, book two to three weeks out. The pattern in JB is that the cheap beds go first and the mid-range hotels hold their rooms at raised rates — so waiting rarely wins.
