Deepavali 2026 in Johor Bahru — A Long Weekend on Both Sides of the Causeway
The Dates
Deepavali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. In Malaysia, Monday 9 November is the public holiday observance (source: Johor state holiday list, publicholidays.com.my). In Singapore, Deepavali is also a public holiday on 8 November, with Monday 9 November a holiday in lieu for anyone whose rest day falls on the Sunday (source: Singapore Ministry of Manpower).
That combination is rarer than it sounds. Most Malaysian public holidays are not Singapore public holidays and vice versa. Deepavali 2026 is a long weekend on both sides of the border at once — which is why it behaves differently from a Merdeka weekend.

What That Does to JB
Demand comes from two directions simultaneously: Singaporeans crossing over for a three-day break, and Malaysians travelling home or travelling domestically. Expect the Causeway to be heavy in both directions, expect malls to be full, and expect budget accommodation to book out well before the week itself.
If your dates are flexible, the following weekend is dramatically calmer.

Crossing
- Cross before 7 AM or after 9 PM. The Friday evening and Saturday morning windows are the worst.
- Bus CW1 from Woodlands or bus 170 from Queen Street to JB Sentral. Buses and motorcycles clear immigration faster than cars.
- JB CIQ or JB Sentral to Taman Pelangi is a RM8–12 Grab ride.

What Is Open
Banks and government offices close on the holiday. Malls, convenience stores and most restaurants stay open. Some family-run Indian restaurants close for the day itself — if there is a specific place you want to eat at, message them first rather than turning up.
The Taman Pelangi night market runs every Tuesday from 4:30 PM, so 10 November — the day after the holiday — is a market night.
Where to Stay
Pelangi Capsule Hostel in Taman Pelangi: pods at RM30 for a first-time guest's first night, RM35 per night after that, repeat guests RM35 throughout. Tourism Tax of RM10 per room per night applies to foreign tourists only — Malaysians and permanent residents are exempt.
Self check-in runs 24 hours, no curfew, and luggage storage before check-in and after check-out is free. Central Taman Pelangi means food is walkable and Grab rides are short.
Book Early
For a two-country long weekend, three to four weeks ahead is not too early. Check availability and book directly — no booking fee, no OTA commission.
