Singapore VEP Goes to S$50 a Day on 1 January 2027: What Drivers From JB Should Know

The Short Version

From 1 January 2027, Singapore's daily Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for foreign-registered vehicles rises from S$35 to S$50 for cars and from S$4 to S$7 for motorcycles. The 10 free VEP days a year and the free VEP hours on weekdays are removed. We read two news reports on 4 November 2026 and they agree on these figures. Nothing in this post is an official notice, so confirm with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) before you drive in.

What Changes on 1 January 2027

  • Cars: S$35 → S$50 per day.
  • Motorcycles: S$4 → S$7 per day.
  • Free days and free hours removed: the 10 free VEP days per year and the free VEP hours on weekdays no longer apply.
  • ERP without an on-board unit (OBU): a flat S$10 per ERP operational day for cars and other vehicles, S$3 for motorcycles.
  • Weekends and public holidays: both reports say the VEP fee applies on all days except weekends and Singapore public holidays. That is how they word it, so check the exact rule on LTA's site before a weekend trip.

Sources: Free Malaysia Today / Bernama, 6 Feb 2026 and Mothership, 10 Apr 2026, both checked 4 November 2026.

What We Could Not Confirm

  • We did not read LTA's own notice. Both numbers above come from news reports.
  • We did not read the changes for goods vehicles (GVP), the price of an OBU, or what Malaysia charges on its side. Do not treat their absence as "no change".
  • We are not converting to ringgit. Exchange rates move; check a live rate on the day.

How Malaysians Are Reacting

Mothership reports that some Malaysians plan to avoid weekday trips or cut non-essential ones, and that a motorcycle commuter expects his monthly VEP spend to go from S$80 to S$140. It also says some may switch to public transport once the RTS Link opens. That is one outlet's sample of opinions, not a survey.

If You Would Rather Not Drive

If the daily fee changes your plan, the usual non-driving routes from JB still apply. See our guides on the Causeway crossing for backpackers, JB–Singapore commuting and the RTS Link timeline. The RTS Link is not yet open at the time of writing, so check the latest announcement before planning around it.

  • Day trip: stay in JB and cross by bus or on foot instead of paying a daily vehicle fee. See Singapore to JB day trip.
  • Several days in Singapore: add up S$50 a day against the fare you would pay as a pedestrian passenger, and check the current fare on the day.
  • Peak days: year-end school holidays are busy at both checkpoints. See our year-end crossing tips.
