The Short Version

The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix runs 9–11 October 2026, with the race on Sunday 11 October at Marina Bay. Travel guides report that Marina Bay hotels charge two to three times their off-season rates that weekend. A capsule at Pelangi Capsule Hostel in Johor Bahru is RM35 a night. Some race-weekend visitors do the maths, cross the Causeway, and sleep here instead.

Why Singapore Rooms Get So Expensive in Race Week

The circuit runs through the Marina Bay streets, so the hotels closest to it fill first and price highest. The travel guides we checked on 10 October 2026 say the same thing in different words:

  • Marina Bay hotels command race-weekend markups of roughly 2x to 3x off-season prices.
  • Suburban, Sentosa and East Coast areas rise less, around 1.1x to 1.4x.
  • Citywide rates reached a record average in October 2025, so a room that looked reasonable in August can cost far more by race week.

We have not quoted a Singapore room price here because rates change daily. Check the live price for your own dates before you decide.

What We See at Pelangi

We keep our own check-in records, so these are our numbers, not an estimate from elsewhere:

  • From March to May 2026, 100% of our guests were Malaysian.
  • In August 2026 we had 115 check-ins. 67 were Malaysian (58%) and 48 (42%) were from other countries.
  • Guests from China went from 2 in June to 8 in July to 24 in August. Guests from India went from 1 to 5 to 9 over the same months.

We cannot tell you how many of those guests came because of the race, and we will not claim it. What we can say is that more people from outside Malaysia are choosing to sleep in Johor Bahru, and a race weekend, when Singapore rooms cost the most, is exactly when a RM35 capsule looks attractive.

Is It Worth Staying in JB for the Singapore Grand Prix?

It depends on what you value. A capsule is a private pod in a shared room with shared bathrooms, not a hotel room at the circuit. If you want to walk back from the track in ten minutes, Marina Bay is the only option. If you mainly want a clean, safe bed for the night and you do not mind the border crossing, Johor Bahru costs a fraction of the price. Many visitors split the difference: they go to the circuit in Singapore for the day and sleep in JB.

How to Get from Pelangi to Singapore

Pelangi is in Taman Pelangi, roughly 10–15 minutes by Grab from JB CIQ. From there you cross by the Causeway:

  • Causeway Link CW1 between Woodlands Bus Interchange and JB CIQ costs RM2.60 one way and has been cashless since 1 October 2026 (EZ-Link, ManjaLink or a contactless card).
  • KTM Shuttle Tebrau runs between Woodlands and JB Sentral.
  • Grab or your own vehicle across the Causeway or the Tuas Second Link.

Allow extra time. A guest crossing the Causeway on the night of 9 October told us they were stuck in a traffic jam, and race weekends bring more cross-border traffic than usual. The RTS Link is not open yet (see our RTS Link delay explainer), so plan on the Causeway. For the full border checklist, see Getting Here and our visa run guide.

What Does a Capsule Cost and What Do You Get?

A capsule at Pelangi is RM35 per night. If you are a new guest booking direct on our website, your first night is RM30. Check-in starts from 2:00 PM and on-site staff assist. Bring your passport (or IC if Malaysian) because we need a photo of it to check you in. We also have a short video that shows how to use the capsule, curtain, light and outlets.

Book Early on Race Weekend

Capsules fill up on busy weekends. If you already know your dates, book direct here and message us if you will arrive late at night after the race or the border queue.
