Chelsea vs JDT in Johor, 9 August 2026 — Where to Stay and How to Get There
The Fixture
Chelsea play Johor Darul Ta'zim at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Sunday 9 August 2026, kick-off 8:00 PM Malaysian time. The match was originally set for 11 August and was brought forward two days by mutual agreement between the clubs (source: Free Malaysia Today, 9 June 2026). It is the last stop of Chelsea's pre-season tour before the Premier League restarts on 22 August (source: Chelsea FC official site).
The stadium holds about 40,000. Tickets went on general sale through the club's appointed Malaysian ticketing partner — check the official channels rather than resale listings, and confirm the kick-off time on the day, because pre-season fixtures do move.
Why Beds Will Be Tight That Weekend
Two things land on the same date, and this is the part most people miss.
9 August 2026 is also Singapore's National Day, and it falls on a Sunday — which means Monday 10 August is a public holiday in lieu for anyone whose rest day falls on the 9th (source: Singapore Ministry of Manpower public holidays list). So Singapore has a long weekend at exactly the moment 40,000 people are heading to a stadium 20 minutes from the border.
Translation: the Causeway will be busy, and JB accommodation across every price band will be booked earlier than usual. If you are coming for the match, or just crossing for a normal weekend and did not realise the match was on, book before the first week of August.
Getting to the Stadium
Sultan Ibrahim Stadium is in Iskandar Puteri, west of Johor Bahru city centre — not in the city itself. From central JB it is a Grab ride; budget more time and more money than usual on match day, because surge pricing and traffic around a full stadium are guaranteed.
Plan the return leg before you go. Leaving a 40,000-capacity stadium at roughly 10 PM with everyone else calling a Grab at the same time is the part of the evening that goes wrong. Either wait it out somewhere nearby, or agree a pickup point away from the stadium exits.
Where to Stay
Staying in the city centre rather than next to the stadium is usually the better trade: more food, more transport options, and a short ride back to the border the next morning.
Pelangi Capsule Hostel is in Taman Pelangi, central JB. A pod is RM30 for a first-time guest's first night and RM35 per night after that; repeat guests pay RM35 throughout. Malaysia Tourism Tax of RM10 per room per night applies to foreign tourists only — Malaysians and permanent residents are exempt.
Check-in is from 2:00 PM, check-out by 12:00 PM, and self check-in runs 24 hours with no curfew — which matters when you are getting back from a night match. Luggage storage before check-in and after check-out is free.
Crossing the Causeway on Match Weekend
Standard JB advice applies, only more so:
- Cross very early or very late. Mid-morning Saturday and late Sunday evening are the worst windows on a normal weekend, and this is not a normal weekend.
- Bus CW1 from Woodlands or bus 170 from Queen Street both reach JB Sentral; motorcycles and buses clear immigration faster than cars.
- From JB CIQ or JB Sentral to Taman Pelangi is a RM8–12 Grab ride.
Our full route breakdown is in the Causeway crossing guide, and there is a separate piece on avoiding transport scams on the JB side.
If You Are Not Here for the Football
You still get the crowds. If your trip is flexible, shift it a week either side and JB goes back to normal pricing and normal queues. If it is not flexible, book the bed now and cross at an unfashionable hour.
Check availability and book directly — no booking fee, no OTA commission. See what else is on in our JB events calendar.
