Home Under Renovation? Stay at a Capsule Nearby While the Contractor Works
The Short Version
If your house or apartment in Johor Bahru is being renovated and you cannot live in it for a few days, a few weeks or a few months, a capsule at Pelangi Capsule Hostel in Taman Pelangi is a low-cost base. It is RM35 per night (flat, every day of the week) or RM600–RM650 per month, and you stay close enough to visit your home site every day. This guide is written for Malaysians dealing with a renovation, not for tourists. It covers why a home under works is often unlivable, how the options compare, how a capsule stay works, and a checklist to agree with your contractor.
Why a Home Under Renovation Is Often Unlivable
People tend to plan the renovation budget carefully and the living arrangements badly. Some jobs you can live around. Many you cannot, and the reasons are practical rather than dramatic:
- Dust. Hacking tiles, plaster removal, grinding and sanding put fine dust into every room, including closed cupboards. It is hard on anyone with asthma, allergies, babies or elderly relatives.
- Noise. Drilling and hacking run through the working day. If you work from home or have night-shift sleep to protect, the house stops being a place to rest.
- No water or no power. Rewiring, plumbing and aircon works often mean the supply is cut for hours or days at a time. No shower, no fridge, no fan.
- Chemical smell. Waterproofing coatings, paint, sealants, floor adhesive and termite treatment all have strong odours. Follow the contractor's instructions on how long to stay out of treated areas.
- Safety. Exposed wiring, open floor areas, nails, stacked materials and strangers coming and going are not a good setting for children or for sleeping.
- Security. Doors or windows may be removed or left unlocked during the day, which is a good reason to take valuables with you.
Flood repair adds damp, mould risk and drying time on top of all of the above. None of this means you must leave for the whole job. It does mean you should decide on purpose, before day one, where you will sleep.
How Typical Jobs Affect Your Stay
Every house and contractor is different, so treat these as rough, common patterns and confirm timing in writing with your own contractor:
- Termite treatment or pest control: often a short stay-out, from the same day to a few days, depending on the product and what the technician advises.
- Waterproofing (bathroom, roof, balcony): often days to a couple of weeks, because coatings need curing time before the area can be used.
- Aircon, plumbing or small rewiring jobs: often a few days, with water or power cut off for part of it.
- Flooring (tiles, laminate, vinyl): often one to a few weeks, with furniture moved and dust throughout.
- Full rewiring, kitchen or bathroom rebuild, or a whole-house renovation: often several weeks to a few months, and schedules slip more often than they shorten.
- Flood repair: varies widely with how much was damaged and how long drying and repairs take.
Plan for the job to run longer than the quote says. A cheap base that you can extend from night to night is worth more than a cheap base you must commit to for a fixed period.
Your Options, Compared Honestly
We run a capsule hostel, so we are not neutral. Here is the general reasoning, with no competitor prices quoted. Check current prices yourself for anything outside our own rates.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Staying with family or friends | Free or near-free, familiar, often the first choice for a few nights | Wears thin over weeks; shift workers and children disrupt routines on both sides; you may not want to impose for a month |
| Hotel | Private room and bathroom, daily housekeeping | Nightly cost multiplies fast across a long job; usually no kitchen |
| Airbnb or short-term rental | Space and a kitchen, good for families | Pricing and minimum stays vary; cleaning and other fees can add up; availability changes |
| Capsule hostel | Lowest cost for one person; a private pod with a curtain; shared kitchen; flexible nightly or monthly | Shared bathrooms; one person per pod; not suited to a family who wants one room together |
The honest summary: if you are one adult (or several adults who each want their own pod) and the job runs more than a few days, a capsule is usually the cheapest sensible option, because you pay for a bed and a shower rather than a whole room. If you are a family with small children, a hotel or rental room will probably suit you better, and a capsule is more useful for the adult who needs to stay near the site on weekdays.
How a Capsule Stay Works for This Situation
Pelangi Capsule Hostel is at 26A Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru. Pelangi Leisure Mall (with Giant and Mr DIY) is about a two-minute walk away, and JB city is a short Grab ride. Here is what that means day to day.
Nightly or monthly
The nightly rate is RM35 per night, flat on all days. New customers who book direct on our website pay RM30 for the first night. The monthly capsule rate is RM600–RM650 per month. As a rough guide, 17 nights at RM35 is RM595, so if your job looks like three weeks or more it is worth asking about the monthly rate. If you are unsure how long you will need, start nightly and ask Maya about switching. For what the monthly rate involves, see Monthly Capsule Rent in Johor Bahru: What You Get.
What you get
- One person per private capsule pod, with a privacy curtain
- Air-conditioned sleeping area, free WiFi and a lounge
- Shared bathrooms with hot showers
- A shared kitchen, so you do not have to eat out every meal
Ask the team about laundry arrangements when you check in.
Keep your routine, visit the site daily
The practical advantage of a nearby base is that you can keep going to work, school runs and errands on your normal routes, and drop by your home each day or two to check progress, answer the contractor's questions and approve small decisions on the spot. Many renovation problems (wrong tile, wrong socket position) are cheaper to fix when someone catches them early.
Check-in, luggage and a few bags
Check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out is by 12:00 PM. Luggage can be left with staff before check-in or after check-out, subject to space. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability, but if you know your start date, booking ahead avoids an unplanned night elsewhere. Pack light: a pod is a place to sleep, not a wardrobe, so bring a few days of clothes and leave the rest at home or with a relative.
House rules that matter here
Quiet hours start at 11 PM. Outside visitors are not allowed in the sleeping areas, so meet your contractor or designer at your home site rather than at the hostel. If you are a night-shift worker, tell the staff your hours so you know what to expect.
Parking
On-site parking is limited. There is public and street parking nearby, so if you drive, plan for that rather than assuming a reserved space.
Practical Checklist
What to pack
- Work clothes, a few changes of clothes and your own toiletries
- Phone charger, power bank and any laptop you need for work
- Important documents and valuables: take them out of the house before works begin
- Medication and anything you cannot replace quickly
- Earplugs and a sleep mask if you sleep at odd hours
What to agree with the contractor
- A written schedule with start date, expected finish and milestones, and what happens if it slips
- Which days water and power will be cut, so you can plan your nights away
- Who holds the keys and when the site is open, closed or locked
- Daily cleaning and rubbish removal expectations
- How and when you will be updated, for example a short WhatsApp message with photos at the end of each day
- How long to stay out after waterproofing, paint or termite treatment, in the contractor's own words
Before you leave the house
- Turn off the main water and electrical switches for any areas not being worked on, if the contractor agrees
- Cover or move furniture, and photograph the rooms before works start
- Tell neighbours and your management office about the works, if you live in a condo or apartment
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stay for just a few nights while the contractor does a short job?
Yes. The nightly rate is RM35 per night, flat on all days, and new customers booking direct on our website pay RM30 for the first night. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability.
What if the renovation runs longer than planned?
That is common. Start nightly and ask the on-site staff about the monthly capsule rate of RM600–RM650 per month if your stay is likely to pass about three weeks. Message Maya on WhatsApp early so a pod is not an issue when you need to extend.
Can my spouse or family stay with me?
Each pod is for one person, so every person needs their own pod. We do not offer a shared room for a family. For a family with young children, a hotel or rental room will probably be a better fit; a capsule works well if one adult needs to stay near the site.
Can I bring my contractor or designer to the hostel to meet?
Outside visitors are not allowed in the sleeping areas, so it is easier to meet at your home site. This also keeps the hostel quiet for other guests.
Where do I keep my belongings?
Bring only what you need. Staff can hold luggage before check-in or after check-out, subject to space. Keep valuables and important documents with you or somewhere safe, and leave non-essential items at home or with a relative.
Can I cook?
There is a shared kitchen, so you can prepare simple meals instead of eating out every day. Shared means you clean up after yourself and take turns with other guests.
How do I pay?
We accept DuitNow QR, bank transfer (Maybank) and cash in MYR.
