Changi Airport Transit? Stay in Johor Bahru and Save Hundreds (2026)

The Changi Airport Hotel Problem
You've got a long layover at Changi Airport. Maybe your connecting flight is tomorrow morning. Maybe you landed at midnight and your next leg doesn't leave until noon. Either way, you need somewhere to sleep.
So you search for hotels near Changi Airport. And then you close the tab.
The Crowne Plaza at Changi runs SGD250-350 per night. YOTEL, the "budget" capsule option inside the airport, charges SGD80-120 for a few hours. The Ambassador Transit Hotel? SGD70-90 for a 6-hour block. Even the cheapest airport-adjacent hotels on Booking.com start at SGD100+.
For a bed. For one night. When you're just passing through.
If you're a budget traveller, this math doesn't work. You're spending more on a transit sleep than on entire days in Southeast Asia. There's a city 90 minutes south where a clean capsule pod costs SGD10-13 per night, the food is incredible, and you actually get to explore a real place instead of staring at departure boards.
It's Johor Bahru.
The JB Alternative: RM35-45 Per Night Instead of SGD150+
Johor Bahru sits at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, connected to Singapore by the Causeway. It's about 1.5 hours from Changi Airport by public transport, and prices are in a completely different league.
At Pelangi Capsule Hostel, a pod costs RM35/night for an Upper Deck Pod or RM45/night for a Lower Deck Pod (ground-level, no ladder). That's roughly SGD10-13. Each pod comes with an LED reading light, USB charging port, and personal locker. The hostel is in Taman Pelangi, one of JB's best food neighbourhoods. Hawker centres and local restaurants are everywhere.
Think about it. One night at YOTEL Changi costs the same as three to four nights in a JB capsule. One night at the Crowne Plaza Changi equals a full week at Pelangi. And instead of sleeping in an airport terminal, you're sleeping in a real neighbourhood where a plate of chicken rice costs RM6 and the teh tarik flows freely.
Non-Malaysian guests pay an additional RM10/room/night tourism tax, so your all-in nightly cost is RM45-55 (SGD13-16). Still dirt cheap.
How to Get from Changi Airport to Johor Bahru
Three options, cheapest to most convenient. Pick based on how tired you are and how much you care about saving money.
Option 1: Public Transport (SGD5, 1.5-2 hours)
The backpacker route. Works well if you're not dragging a massive suitcase.
- Changi Airport to Kranji MRT: Take the East-West Line (green) from Changi Airport station towards Jurong East. Change at Tanah Merah. Ride to Kranji station. Takes about 50 minutes. Cost: ~SGD2.
- Kranji to JB CIQ: Walk to the Kranji bus stop and catch the CW1 (Causeway Link) bus. It crosses the Causeway directly to JB Sentral/CIQ. Cost: SGD1.50-2. The bus drops you at JB's immigration checkpoint.
- JB CIQ to Pelangi Capsule: Clear Malaysian immigration, then grab a Grab ride to the hostel. It's about 10 minutes and costs RM6-10.
Total cost: ~SGD5-6 one way. Total time: 1.5-2 hours depending on immigration queues.
You can also take the MRT to Woodlands checkpoint instead of Kranji. The Thomson-East Coast Line runs to Woodlands North, which puts you right at the Singapore immigration building. Walk through, take the CW1 across, done. Same cost, sometimes faster depending on which MRT line is closer to your Changi terminal.
Option 2: Direct Coach (SGD10-15, 1.5-2 hours)
Transtar and Causeway Link operate direct coach services from various Singapore locations. From Changi area, your best bet:
- Take the MRT to Queen Street Bus Terminal (near Bugis) and catch a Transtar or Causeway Link coach directly to JB Sentral. Coaches run every 15-30 minutes.
- Cost: SGD10-15 depending on operator and time.
- Comfortable seats, aircon, and the driver handles the border crossings. You just hop off to stamp your passport.
For the full step-by-step on crossing the Causeway, including peak hours to avoid and immigration tips, see our complete Causeway crossing guide.
Option 3: Grab or Private Transfer (SGD50-70, 1-1.5 hours)
If you're arriving late, carrying heavy bags, or just too wrecked from a long flight to deal with public transport:
- Book a Grab from Changi Airport directly to JB. Cross-border Grab rides are available and cost SGD50-70 depending on demand.
- Private transfer services on Klook or KKday run SGD60-80 for a sedan.
- Door-to-door. No transfers, no confusion. You still clear immigration at both checkpoints, but the driver waits.
Best if you're splitting with 2-3 people. At SGD20-25 per person for door-to-door service, it's competitive with the coach.
How to Get Back to Changi Airport
Reverse the route. The key number: leave JB 3-4 hours before your flight.
Sounds like a lot. Here's the breakdown:
- 30-60 minutes: Immigration at the Causeway (can be longer during weekday mornings and Friday evenings)
- 45-60 minutes: Transit from JB CIQ to Changi Airport
- 60 minutes: Buffer for unexpected queues + Changi check-in
For a 6:00 AM flight, leave JB by 2:00-2:30 AM. Early, yes. But Grab drivers are available 24/7 in JB, and the Causeway is empty at that hour. You'll fly through immigration. We've had guests do this dozens of times.
For a noon flight, leave by 8:00-9:00 AM. More traffic, but still manageable.
Pro tip: Check out of the hostel the night before (check-out is at 12:00 PM) and store your bags. Grab a few hours of sleep, then head out. Or check out at noon, explore JB for the afternoon, and catch a late evening Grab to Changi for a red-eye flight.
Cost Comparison: Changi Airport Hotel vs. JB Stay
Real math. A budget Changi airport hotel (SGD120/night) vs. Pelangi Capsule Hostel in JB, including all transport and meal costs.
| Expense | Changi Hotel (1 night) | JB Stay (1 night) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | SGD120 | SGD10-13 (RM35-45) |
| Tourism Tax | - | SGD3 (RM10) |
| Transport (round trip) | SGD0 (you're at the airport) | SGD10-12 (public transport both ways) |
| Meals (dinner + breakfast) | SGD25-40 (airport food) | SGD5-8 (RM18-28 for hawker meals) |
| Total | SGD145-160 | SGD28-36 |
| Savings | - | SGD110-130 saved |
The savings scale even faster over multiple nights:
| Duration | Changi Hotel Total | JB Stay Total | You Save |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 night | SGD145-160 | SGD28-36 | ~SGD120 |
| 2 nights | SGD290-320 | SGD44-60 | ~SGD245 |
| 3 nights | SGD435-480 | SGD60-84 | ~SGD370 |
Three nights at a Changi airport hotel costs more than a week-long trip through Malaysia. The JB option gets you the same number of sleeps, better food, and a city to explore. All for less than one night at the airport.
What to Do in JB While You Wait
JB isn't just a cheap bed. It's a genuinely interesting city with some of the best food in Malaysia. Here's what's worth your time.
The Food Crawl
Honestly, this alone is worth the trip. Taman Pelangi, the neighbourhood where Pelangi Capsule Hostel sits, has excellent food within walking distance:
- San Low Seafood (5-minute walk) — known for San Lou Bee Hoon. Dry-fried vermicelli with prawns that locals queue for. Budget RM15-25.
- IT Roo Cafe — old-school kopitiam for kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs at breakfast. Under RM8.
- Restoran Hua Mui — a Taman Pelangi institution since the 1940s. Try the Hainanese chicken chop. RM12-15.
- Salahuddin Bakery — one of JB's oldest bakeries. Grab banana cake and curry puffs for under RM5.

Quick JB Highlights
- Tan Hiok Nee Street: Heritage street with restored shophouses, indie cafes, street art, vintage shops. Free to walk around, great for photos. About 10 minutes by Grab from the hostel.
- Pasar Karat (Flea Market): Wednesday and Saturday nights near JB Old Town. Chaotic, loud, full of random finds. Worth an hour.
- Night Markets: Different neighbourhoods host pasar malam on different nights. Tuesday night market at Taman Sri Tebrau is a good one. Satay sticks for RM0.60, lok-lok for RM1-2 per skewer, fresh fruit juice for RM3.
- KSL City Mall: If you just want aircon and shopping, KSL is the spot. Lots of food, a cinema, and prices that make Singapore look ridiculous.
Shopping Detour
If your layover is long enough, Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) is 30 minutes from JB city centre by Grab (RM20-25). Nike, Adidas, Coach, dozens of other brands at 30-70% off Singapore retail. Not a bad way to burn 3-4 hours.
Practical Details for Transit Travellers
The stuff you actually need to know.
Check-in and Check-out
- Check-in: 3:00 PM
- Check-out: 12:00 PM (noon)
- Early check-in or late check-out may be available — message us on WhatsApp to ask.
Luggage
Everyone asks this: "Can I bring my big backpack / suitcase to a capsule hostel?" Yes. Pelangi has a luggage storage area at reception. Your personal locker in the pod holds valuables (passport, electronics, wallet). Big bags go in the common luggage area. We've hosted hundreds of transit travellers. The system works.
Location
Address: 26A Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.
Taman Pelangi is central and well-connected. It's a 10-minute Grab from JB CIQ (the immigration checkpoint). See our Getting Here page for detailed directions from the Causeway.
WiFi and Connectivity
Free WiFi throughout the hostel. Network: pelangi capsule. Fast enough for streaming, video calls, and uploading your JB food photos.
Grab Availability
Grab works great in JB. Rides within the city cost RM5-15. Cross-border rides to Singapore are available but cost way more (SGD50-70). For getting around JB itself, just use Grab. Public buses exist but they're slow and confusing for visitors.
Currency
Malaysia uses the Ringgit (MYR/RM). As of 2026, SGD1 = approximately RM3.40. Most places are cash only. ATMs are everywhere. Withdraw RM200-300 and you'll be set for 1-2 nights of food, transport, and activities. Some cafes and malls accept card/e-wallet, but don't count on it at hawker stalls.
Immigration Tips
- Passport required. No visa needed for most nationalities (90-day visa-free for EU/US/UK/Australia/etc.).
- You'll clear two immigration checkpoints: Singapore exit and Malaysia entry (and reverse on return).
- Download the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) beforehand at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my. Saves time at the Malaysian immigration counter.
- Weekday mornings (7-10 AM) and Friday evenings (5-9 PM) are the worst for queues. Late nights and early mornings are fastest.
Who This Works Best For
This isn't for everyone. But it's perfect for a few specific situations:
Long Layovers (8+ hours)
If your layover is 8 hours or more, you have time to get to JB, sleep, eat, and get back to Changi with room to spare. Over 12 hours? No-brainer. You'd be paying airport prices to sit in a terminal chair when you could be eating satay at a night market.
Red-Eye Departures
Flight at 1:00 AM? Instead of hanging around Changi for 8 hours, spend the afternoon in JB, have a proper dinner, then Grab to Changi at 9:00-10:00 PM. You show up rested and fed instead of bored and broke.
Early Morning Arrivals
Landed at Changi at 6:00 AM and your connecting flight isn't until the next morning? That's 24 hours. You could drop SGD120-250 on an airport hotel, or spend SGD30 total on a JB capsule, three incredible meals, and actually see a city.
Budget Travellers on Long Routes
Flying a multi-stop route through Asia, say London to Bangkok with a Changi connection? Every dollar saved on transit accommodation is a dollar you spend on actual travel. JB turns a dead layover into a mini side trip.
Digital Nomads and Remote Workers
Need to work during your layover? The hostel has WiFi, the neighbourhood has cafes, and RM10 gets you a coffee and a desk for the afternoon. Beats paying SGD6 for a Changi Airport latte while sitting on the floor next to a power outlet.
The Bottom Line
Changi Airport is a great airport. It's also an expensive place to sleep. If you've got 8+ hours between flights and you're watching your budget, JB is right there. 90 minutes south, five times cheaper, and way more interesting than Terminal 3.
The route is simple. The savings are real. And worst case, you end up discovering a city with some of the best street food in Southeast Asia.
Upper Deck Pods start at RM35/night. Lower Deck Pods at RM45/night. Book your pod at Pelangi Capsule Hostel and turn your Changi layover from a budget drain into a budget win.
