Booked on Hostelworld? Why You Only Paid a Deposit — and What to Bring to Pay the Rest in JB
You Paid Online — But Not the Full Price
If you booked a capsule at Pelangi through Hostelworld and your online payment looked smaller than the room total, that is how Hostelworld is designed to work. It is different from Booking.com, Agoda or Trip.com, where you may pay the full amount in advance or pay everything at the property. With Hostelworld, part of the price is paid online and the rest is paid to the hostel.
How Hostelworld's Deposit Model Works
According to Hostelworld's terms and conditions:
- A deposit is paid online. The terms describe it as "a part payment towards the total value of your booking" and say it is non-refundable unless the hostel agrees otherwise.
- There is also a flat booking fee, which the terms say is non-refundable in all circumstances.
- You pay the balance to the hostel on arrival. The terms say the guest is responsible for paying the balance "to the travel services provider on arrival".
Hostelworld's own blog says the deposit is typically around 12–15% of the total cost. That figure comes from a blog post, not the terms, so treat it as a rough guide and check your own confirmation for the exact amount.
What About Refunds?
The refund rules depend on the rate type and the hostel's policy:
- The terms say cancellation deadlines are normally at least 24 hours before your agreed check-in date.
- Hostelworld's blog explains that on a flexible rate, cancelling within the hostel's allowed window returns the deposit; on a non-refundable rate the deposit is lost.
- Changes to dates are meant to be agreed directly with the hostel, according to the terms.
Because details can differ by rate and over time, read the cancellation terms on your Hostelworld booking page before you pay.
No-Shows on Hostelworld
If you don't arrive, the terms say you authorise the hostel to charge an amount not exceeding one night's stay. If you might arrive late, message us on WhatsApp with your estimated arrival time so we know you're coming — see our no-show and late-arrival guide for how the platforms compare.
Paying the Balance at Pelangi
When you arrive at Pelangi Capsule Hostel, we will tell you the balance still to pay for your Hostelworld booking. Cash in Malaysian Ringgit is the simplest way to settle it. We also accept DuitNow QR (including Touch 'n Go, Boost and GrabPay through your bank or e-wallet app) and credit cards. If you are crossing from Singapore, there are money changers near JB CIQ, so you can exchange before you come.
- Keep your Hostelworld booking confirmation handy so we can match your name and dates.
- Bring your passport or ID — see our guide to ID and tourism tax at check-in.
- Check-in at Pelangi is self-service, so you can arrive without waiting at a reception desk.
Hostelworld vs Booking Direct
Our standard rate is RM35/night on every channel. If you haven't booked yet, booking direct on our website gets a first-timer rate of RM30 for the first night, with no booking fee. If you already booked on Hostelworld, no problem — just bring the balance. For a broader comparison, see how four platforms' policies differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I pay the rest of my Hostelworld booking before I arrive?
No. Hostelworld's terms say the balance is paid to the hostel on arrival. At Pelangi, you settle it when you check in.
Is the Hostelworld deposit refundable?
It depends on the rate and the hostel's cancellation policy. The terms say the deposit is non-refundable unless the hostel agrees otherwise, and the booking fee is non-refundable in all circumstances. Read your booking's cancellation terms before paying.
Can I pay the Hostelworld balance by card or QR?
At Pelangi we accept cash (MYR), DuitNow QR and credit cards. Hostelworld's own terms don't specify the payment method for the balance, so it is set by each hostel.
