Arriving in JB by Train: JB Sentral to Taman Pelangi

You've Just Arrived at JB Sentral — Now What?
JB Sentral is a busy, multi-level transport hub that doubles as a border crossing complex. For first-time visitors, stepping off the train and being confronted with signs for immigration, City Square Mall, taxis, buses, and the CIQ checkpoint all at once can feel a little overwhelming. Take a breath. Getting from here to Taman Pelangi is genuinely easy and takes about 10 minutes.
This guide is for travellers who have just arrived by KTM ETS train and want to reach Pelangi Capsule Hostel in Taman Pelangi as simply as possible. We will also cover what is around the station, your transport options, and what to expect when you check in.
Understanding the JB Sentral Layout
JB Sentral station is connected to a larger complex that includes City Square Mall (directly adjoining the station), the JB CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine) building for those heading to or from Singapore, and a bus terminal. The whole area is enclosed and air-conditioned, which is a relief after a long train journey.
When you exit the train platform area, follow signs for the main station exit or City Square Mall. The ground floor of City Square has money changers, convenience stores, food courts, ATMs, and a pharmacy — useful if you need to sort out cash or grab something to eat before heading to the hostel. The mall is open daily.
If you see signs for the Singapore Causeway or CIQ — that is the border crossing to Singapore and is not what you want if you are staying in JB. Stay on the Malaysia side and make your way toward the station taxi/Grab pick-up areas.
Getting from JB Sentral to Taman Pelangi
Option 1: Grab (Recommended)
This is what almost every visitor uses, and for good reason. Grab is Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app — think of it as the regional equivalent of Uber. It works well in JB, drivers are plentiful, and the fare is displayed upfront so there are no surprises.
- Fare: approximately RM8 to RM12 from JB Sentral to Taman Pelangi
- Journey time: around 8 to 12 minutes, depending on traffic
- How to use: Open the Grab app, set your pickup as JB Sentral, and your destination as "Pelangi Capsule Hostel" or the address 26A Jalan Perang, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru. A driver is usually matched within 1–3 minutes.
If you do not have the Grab app yet, download it before your trip and set up your account. You can pay by card or e-wallet — no need for cash in the app, though cash payment is also an option with some drivers.
The best place to wait for your Grab at JB Sentral is outside the main station entrance or at the designated ride-hailing pickup zone, which is usually marked and separate from the taxi stand. If you are unsure where to wait, the Grab app shows your driver's route in real time and you can call or message the driver to coordinate.
Option 2: Metered Taxi
Metered taxis are available outside JB Sentral. Fares to Taman Pelangi should be broadly similar to Grab — roughly RM10 to RM15 by meter. Ask the driver to use the meter before you get in. Taxis are a perfectly reasonable option if Grab is not available to you, but Grab's price transparency makes it the default choice for most visitors.
Avoid drivers who approach you inside the station and quote flat fares — these tend to be significantly above meter rates, particularly targeting new arrivals with large bags. Walk to the official taxi stand outside.
Option 3: Local Bus
JB has a local bus network, and some routes pass through or near Taman Pelangi. However, routes and schedules change, stops can be hard to identify for newcomers, and the time savings over Grab are minimal given the low cost of ride-hailing in JB. For most tourists arriving with luggage after a long train journey, Grab is simply the better call.
